1. Remember to update the phone
Phones tend to notify you automatically when a new update is available but its also recommended to check the updates manually by yourself. Updates can be installed from the phones app store or settings.
2. Lock the phone
A smartphone should be secured with a strong password which only you know. Other ways to secure your phone is face and fingerprint recognition.
3. Prevent the phone from automatically connecting to wifi
Phones oftne have a setting enabled by default which could put you in danger. It will connect your phone to the nearest free wifi connection automatically which is bad because the provider of the connection can see your personal information such as passwords and browsing history.
4. Install the applications from trusted sources
All the essential applications can be found from the phones pre-installed appstore. Installing the apps from the appstore is much more secure because the apps are checked for any unwanted software beforehand.
5. Check which permissions the app you use wants
When you start any app for the first time it will ask you for your permission to use parts of the phone so that the app can work properly. Lets say a game you want to play on your smartphone requires your permission to use the phones camera, files or location. Thats very suspicious and an app like that should need those permissions in order to function properly.
6. Be cautious about the links you press
For example you are browsing your email and you have received a message from your bank which tells you that your account has been locked. Dont panic! First you have to figure out if the message is actually coming from the official email address. If the address is the same as the one shown on the official sites then it should be real. Also if the email has a link to a website make sure to check that the website address is correct before you give it any personal information. When fake a website wants to get your personal information its called phishing which is a very popular type of scam which people can easily fall for.
